SUNANDA MESQUITA

Sunanda Mesquita is a visual artist, curator, and co-founder of WE-DEY.IN – platform for contemporary arts. In her artistic practice she  focuses on possibilities of a radical, utopian, queer, feminist collectivity of Black and People of Color and the topics of community, solidarity, and belonging.

‚Silenced by Academia’

Inspired by Adrian Piper’s ‘Catalysis series’ from the 1970s, Mesquita’s self-portrait transfers the notion of being silenced into the specific location of Academia, where still up to today the voices of Women of Colour are being constantly surpressed. The portrait depicts the struggles of Women of Colour within the institution, struggles of being confronted with processes of silencing through the depriving of ones experiences and knowledge, while at the same time questions, how the appropriation of decolonial discourses finds its place into the center, stripped from all its original meaning and critique.

‚Silenced by Academia’

Inspiriert von Adrian Piper’s „Catalysis Serie“ aus den 1970ern, transferiert Mesquitas Selbstporträt den Act des ‘Silencing’ an den Ort der Akademie, wo bis zum heutigen Tag die Stimmen von Women of Colour ununterbrochen unterdrückt werden. Das gemalte Selbstportät zeigt den Widerstand von Women of Colour in akademischen Institutionen auf, Widerstände gegen die Prozesse des ‘Silencings’, die durch die Vorenthalten der eigenen Erfahrungen und des Wissens agieren, während Mesquita gleichzeitig hinterfragt, wie die Aneignung dekolonialer Diskurse ihren Weg in das Zentrum der Akademie finden, isoliert ihrer Kritik und ihres Inhaltes.
