WE DEY x Pêdra Costa: The Southern Ass Studies

pedra Kopie“THE SOUTHERN ASS STUDIES” by Pêdra Costa
11th – 14th of April 2019

We are excited to announce Pêdra Costa’s first solo exhibition curated by Jota Mombaça at WE DEY x SPACE.

Rethinking the dynamics of the world from the perspective of The Southern Ass demands a radical reframing of what a body really represents in a world consisting of a misdistribution of violence, brutal binarism and racializing assemblages. Here, we view it from below, and, thus, we read the socius in its density, framing both the breaches of the system and the ways the system reproduces itself.

Pêdra Costa’s trajectory is one of a radical commitment to the questions that their work entails, since these are not mere topics of investigation, but places in which their own body and their communities can make room to grow and unfold their own critical apparatus. The ass and, therefore, the anal becomes a force which is both conceptual as well as embodied.

The Southern Ass Studies, the first solo show by Pêdra Costa, is an attempt at drawing a “situated overview” of the emergence of this field of studies, utilizing their body of work as an emblematic archive for this process. The de_colon_isation series, as well as previous works (such as Verarschung and Solange, tô aberta!), lie at the core of the exhibition’s narrative, which also consists of gathered text fragments, (mis)translations and invisible forces.

About the artist:
Berlin based Pêdra Costa (Brazil, 1978) works with her body, presenting Performance Art, making videos and writing, using complex and fragmented epistemologies from queer communities, being contaminated by knowledge almost completely destroyed by the colonial project and remembering radical caring against the lack of opportunities of living. They engages the political aesthetics of post-porn and anti-colonial strategies. They faces failure every day, transforming failure into creative force, in connection with mixed and forgotten ancestralities.
